The Dilemma - Money or Passion?

Disclaimer:
It really took me too much time to write new post these days, what's wrong with my blogging ability???

Folks,

How often do we hear this saying?
"Money is not everything but everything needs money"
It's a cliché and I bet everyone knows this. But how true is this?

Now, let me analyze and break it into two,

1. Money is not everything

I think it's TRUE

Why?
Money is certainly not the only thing I care about. Without much money, I can still live within my means but given the choice, I'd rather live in the world where money is in abundance and I won't have to worry about not having it every single second and whenever I feel like spending it for occasional luxurious items, I happen to have all the resources I need.

Money is certainly not the only thing that guided me to where I am today. Although it really plays a MAJOR part, I still have other factors like: parents' support, my own determination, luck and hard work. Money 'just' helps smoothen my learning path. Without money I can still learn to become a better person and pursue my interests relentlessly, but given the choice I'd like to learn faster with the help of all the resources I can buy.

I believe that there are still other things that matter more than just how thick your wallet is or how many digits of cash you have in the bank. Money is not everything and it's not the only thing that's important.

Now on the other side of the coin,

2. Everything needs money

I think this is also completely TRUE.

It's obvious, isn't it?
-I need money to buy this laptop and connect to internet so I can write this post.
-I'm living in my friend's condo with special rental fee but still considered expensive.
-I'm now working for the money and all other perks, to earn a living and make ends meet. If money is not the only reason why we work, then please tell me those other reasons, WHY?
-After last Sunday, I went on to pursue my other interest in hospitality by doing part time. I was once again reminded why I quit that particular job scope in the first place. It was really hard work with ridiculously low pay and my stupid pride's telling me,

"Why on earth do you want to spend your weekend getting paid $6/hr as a banquet server while you can get paid more with less hours by working OT as an engineer? Don't you want to use your time to blog, read books, take a rest?"

I'm angry now. Seriously. What happen with I'm-not-in-it-for-the-money-I'm-just-curious-and-want-to-learn-other-things?

This is a true dilemma between money and passion.
Everything needs money but does everything need passion?

The best answer that I can think of now is this.

I obviously need $$$ to fulfill all the tangible things:
- live and eat well
- pay rental fee
- pay off study loan
- pay other bills
- pay for further education, ex: take CELTA and be certified to teach English to adult learners, teaching is also a form of learning. You'll learn everyday by teaching; Japanese course; French course; other certifications; collect books
- pay for entertainment needs: movies, karaoke, social gatherings, sports

While I need passion to fulfill other intangible things like:
- Being able to pull myself together everyday
- Waking up with a smile
- Going to work with enthusiasm
- Being excited everytime
- Feeling happy everyday
- Becoming a successful person in life

If I list it down like this, it's now obvious that we need BOTH MONEY AND PASSION to fulfill everything we want in life. Some of us may be lucky enough to have figured out a way to align passion with the money. Pursuing your passion needs courage and if you're still tight up with the money matter, I'd suggest you put your focus on the money first and then slowly look for your real passion and discover where your happiness lies. Find that balance between your financial and intellectual well-beings. As for me, I'm one of the not-yet-lucky few who is still dreaming of announcing this to the whole world one day: "I LOVE my WORK and the MONEY is EXCELLENT".

Anyway, as Chris Gardner said (and I utterly agree), "what I do is not who I am"

Thus, I shall not let what I do for a living defines who I am in life. Our work shouldn't define who we are as a person. I'll just do my best at work and be positive!

How about you? Have you found both the money and passion?

Bisous,

Sien

Hey dear,I've just started reading your blogs. Just wanna know what's happening in your life since we don't really meet up a lot. But you sound pretty sad. It must have been pretty painful to do what you don't like.
I actually feel grateful that I don't really have anything that I'm PASSIONATE about. Gosh that makes me sound like stupid girl who doesn't give a damn about future. But I do. I do have dreams...or goals whatever people call those. I want to go on Euro trip and someday I hope I can buy a house for my parents…things like that. So I never really give it a deep thought: passion or money. I always go for the latter coz it’s the only thing I need to get what I want. Of course there are things that I won’t give up for money…like morale and values that I’ve stood by all this while. But in general, when it comes to choosing my professional path, the dollars pretty much reign. Don’t I ever feel sad doing what I don’t like? Well, I do get tired sometimes. I sigh, grumble, and cry. But I just told myself: This is life. It’s not and will never be easy.
I’m not offering any comfort, aren’t I? Sorry…
I guess people will have differing opinions on this topic. It really depends on what their priorities are. But I sincerely hope you would figure out which path you want to take. And hopefully 10 years down the road you would look back and say: "I’ve made the right choice".

Haha, thanks a lot dear. Yeah, hopefully I won't have to wait too long, just embracing the situation now, but i refuse to get too comfortable and stop learning, so i guess for now, I'll learn as much as I possibly can, money-wise...I'll find the way^_^

Anyway, I have to take unpaid leave for our holiday later, 'coz this Dec there's forced leave period in the comp (most likely take 6 days annual leave, darn it...)
It's inevitable but they can't stop me from going back home for CNY, no matter what!

That's why I dream of being my own boss, to decide when I want to have the time and how much money I want to earn...*hemm...

Yup, thanks for reading dear! See you soon...(we can always have a dinner gathering some time this month^_^)

I like this topic.

Call me strange or whatever. But I wont let money buy my passion, happiness, love etc.

I am 100 % certain, that Not Everything need money, although most of the thing we need money.

Do you see my point? Your life is your life and it is ruled by ur choice and decision, never let ur power of choice to money.

Once you give in, you will be a slave.

When we all die, our money must be left here. we cant take it with us.

Spend your life on doing what you love.

Money is important, but it is not the most important.

This is what I believe. and I am also struggling on this.

I will write more later ho3... i really love this topic.

Haha...thanks Dy!!

I really want to believe in that too, but the reality is soo different now that we have to make careful decisions and really define the true meaning of success. Whether you measure it by your financial, health, love life, career or whatever. Everyone will have different opinion on this.

For me, finding the thing that I love doing without compromising my financial well-being is the true challenge NOW and nd I have yet to find the answer to this...

Anyway, hope you'll eventually find the balance between money and pursuing your passion!!

Thanks for the comment!
